Why We Started Updem
Tampere has been a center of heavy industrial machinery and acoustic signal processing for over a century. Our founding team spent years on plant sites across the Nordics and Central Europe, watching industry repeat the same costly cycle.
We watched plant managers spend €400,000 to empty and degas a 45-meter crude tank, only for the inspector to find nothing wrong. Meanwhile, at the same facility, an uninspected steam header failed six months later, costing €1.8 million in lost throughput. The calendar-based inspection model was broken.
Static assets including storage tanks, pressure vessels, and piping are inspected every 5 to 10 years. Between inspections, facilities are completely blind to developing defects.
AI predictive maintenance thrived for rotating machinery. Nobody built a reliable, continuous solution for the static infrastructure that holds critical process inventory.
We built Updem as a continuous integrity platform that clamps to operating assets and listens 24/7, combining acoustic emission physics with multi-sensor telemetry to detect defects weeks before failure.
Our Engineering Principles
Respect the Plant
We never ask clients to halt production, drill a hole, or perform hot work. Acoustic sensors attach via non-invasive magnetic clamps while the asset runs at full operational capacity.
Respect the Maintenance Crew
Reliability engineers are exhausted by software that cries wolf. Every Updem finding provides triangulated coordinates, crack growth rates, and a remaining safe operating envelope without black-box guesswork.
Honesty Above Hype
We are acoustic signal processing engineers, not tech evangelists. If an asset is too noisy or attenuation prevents clear defect triangulation, we will tell you upfront before deploying any hardware.
Grounded Standards Alignment
Our diagnostics are developed following recognized Acoustic Emission methodologies and aligned with API 653, ASME Section VIII, and European PED standards.
